Dr. Paul on the Financial Services Hearing, 11/18/08
The Future of the GOP
In the aftermath of the election, the Republican Party must choose whether to embrace the limited government message it once espoused, or to continue down the path of excessive spending, out of control growth of government, unconstitutional wars, and attacks on personal liberties.
Dr. Paul begins his analysis of the future of the GOP by writing:
"(CNN) -- The questions now being asked are: Where to go from here and who's to blame for the downfall of the Republican Party?"
At the 54:04 mark of this C-SPAN video, a C4L precinct leader from Alexandria, Va. questions former Republican House Majority Leader Tom Delay at a Roll Call event focused on issues to be taken up by the new administration and Congress.
His question concerns the excitement generated among youth, independents, and traditionally non-Republican voters by the Ron Paul campaign, as well as the lessons the GOP could learn from that.
Tom Delay gets his answer right in the beginning - Dr. Paul's message of constitutional government is what excited so many people - but he follows that point up by stating that the major problem with the Republican Party is their lack of communication skills in getting out their message.
Sorry, but that's just not the case. The Republican Party got out their message, version 2008, and it was rejected by voters. The problem doesn't lie only with their communication skills; it lies with the message they've been communicating. When Republicans endorsed bloated budgets, nation-building, archaic civil liberties violations, and several hundred billion dollar bailouts, voters found out all they needed to know.
Until their message returns to being one of limited government, fiscal responsibility, and respect for civil liberties, no amount of practice with communication skills will energize the Republican Party in any way similiar to Ron Paul's lasting effect on young people or estranged voters.
Another lesson to be derived from this is that no matter where you're at or what you're doing, any venue can be used to spread the freedom message. In this case, the question aired on C-SPAN, and who knows how many people may inquire into Dr. Paul's message because of it. Whatever situation you find yourself in, turn it to your advantage, and let's communicate our message.
Earlier today, several Iraqi legislators protested a second reading of the recent U.S.-Iraq Security "Agreement," possibly delaying the vote until after next Monday.
Apparently having learned nothing from Nevada, Arizona's 4th legislative district GOP meeting was abruptly halted Monday night when Chairman Bob Burges realized he didn't have the votes to elect his delegates to the county convention or re-elect his friends to leadership positions.
The reason? A large group of Constitutional Republican Reformers including many Ron Paul supporters showed up and established a clear majority. The flustered chair, upon realizing his predicament, gaveled the meeting to a close without electing delegates at all, ordered the sheriff's department to clear the hall, and had the lights shut off.
The reformers quickly gathered in the parking lot determined to finish the meeting. When Chairman Burges had the exterior lights cut as well, the group found a janitor and had them turned back on.They established a quorum, elected a slate of delegates, and new leadership.
I understand that Chairman Burges is a genuinely decent man, but these tactics reflect the deep dysfunction that now haunts the GOP at every level. For my part, I hope that former Chairman Burges and the old guard in LD-4, as well as around the country, come to realize that our ideas ARE Republican ideas and begin to smooth the way for a new generation of leaders rather than causing further erosion of the party by standing in the way.

AOL is out with its list of the best and worst moments from campaign 08. Dr. Paul took the award for best debate moment when he confused John McCain about the President's Working Group on Financial Markets by assuming McCain even knew what that was (he didn't). Another award, Most Loyal Supporters, obviously went to all of you. You can read the complete list here.
